How Do We Trim Long Hedges in Greenhithe?
On a Greenhithe property you might have 30 or 40 metres of hedge along a driveway, plus screening between you and the neighbours. We trim the sides straight and the top level, and we shape it slightly narrower at the top so the base doesn’t go thin and bare.
If a hedge has been left for a few seasons, we’ll take it back in stages instead of cutting it all at once. That way it grows back thick. All the clippings are raked up and taken away. Hedge trimming details
How Can Crown Lifting Help a Shaded Greenhithe Garden?
Big trees are a big part of Greenhithe’s appeal, but they can leave lawns patchy and gutters full. Crown lifting means removing the lower branches so light gets back to the ground and you can walk or mow underneath. We also prune branches that hang over roofs and driveways. What Affects the Cost on a Bigger Greenhithe Section?
Bigger Greenhithe properties are quoted on what’s actually there. The main factors are the length and height of the hedges, how many trees need work, how steep or tricky the access is, and how much green waste there is to remove. Bundling several jobs into one visit usually works out better than booking them separately.
What Garden Maintenance Do Greenhithe Properties Need?
A bigger section means more mowing, more weeding and more leaves. We can come on a regular schedule so it never gets away from you, or do a one-off tidy-up after winter. Visits usually cover mowing, edging, weeding, a light prune and leaf clearing. Garden maintenance
With trees overhead, gutters fill fast here. We can clear those on the same visit. Gutter cleaning
How Do You Care for a Villa or Bungalow Garden?
Mt Eden’s character homes come with a certain kind of garden. There’s a picket fence or low wall at the front, a straight path to the verandah, clipped hedges, and beds full of roses, lavender, hydrangeas and old-fashioned cottage plants. Out the back, there’s often a small lawn, a big established tree and a garden that’s been added to by different owners over the decades.
These gardens look their best when they’re kept neat but not stiff. That means hedges with clean lines, beds that are weeded and edged, roses pruned in winter, and spent flowers taken off through summer. It also means leaving room for the plants that give the garden its character, not cutting everything back to the same shape.
We work around what’s already there. If you’ve gotten a garden you love, we’ll keep it that way. If it’s got away from you, we’ll bring it back step by step.
What Is Box Blight, and What Can Replace Buxus?
Low buxus hedges are part of the classic villa look, but they come with a risk. Box blight is a fungal disease that shows up as brown patches and leaves dropping from sections of the hedge. It spreads most easily in warm, humid, wet weather, which Auckland has plenty of.
A few things help keep it under control. We trim buxus in dry weather where we can, because wet, freshly cut leaves are easier for the disease to get into. We clear fallen leaves from under the hedge, since they can carry spores. And if we spot blight, we tell you straight away rather than trimming over it.
If a buxus hedge is badly affected, it may be time to replace it. Low-growing alternatives such as corokia or compact pittosporum varieties can give a similar clipped look with less trouble. Pest & disease control

What Changes When Your Garden Is Next to Native Bush?
Plenty of Greenhithe homes back onto native bush or have big trees planted decades ago. It’s a lovely setting, and it changes how a garden behaves.
Shade is the first thing. Lawns under or beside big trees grow thin and mossy, and they stay damp for longer after rain. Paths, steps and decks in shade turn green and slippery over winter. Then there’s leaf drop. Some trees shed steadily all year, and the leaves pile up in gutters, on lawns and in garden beds.
None of this means your garden can’t look good. It means the work is a bit different: more raking and gutter clearing, careful crown lifting to let light in, and the occasional water blast to get the green off paths. See water blasting
What Does a Greenhithe Garden Need Through the Year?
Spring: mowing picks up as the grass wakes up. It’s the time to trim hedges after their first growth spurt and to mulch beds before the soil dries out.
Summer: lawns need regular cutting, and hedges get a second trim. Watch for moth plant flowering and pull it before the pods form.
Autumn: leaves start piling up. Gutters, lawns and paths need regular clearing, and it’s a good time for a final hedge tidy.
Winter: growth slows down, so it’s a good window for crown lifting and bigger pruning jobs, plus clearing moss and mould off paths.
Which Pest Plants Should You Watch For on Bush-Edge Sections?
Weeds don’t respect boundaries, and bush-edge sections get more than their share. A few to keep an eye on in Greenhithe:
- Moth plant: a climbing vine with big, choko-like pods full of fluffy seeds. Pull it out before the pods split, or the seeds spread everywhere.
- Wandering willie (tradescantia): a soft, creeping groundcover that smothers damp, shady ground and stops native seedlings coming through.
- Climbing asparagus: a fine, fern-like climber that scrambles over shrubs and into trees.
- Privet: a common old hedge plant that spreads by seed, now listed as a pest plant in Auckland.
We pull out what we can on regular visits and take it away rather than leaving it to re-root. For big infestations, it’s worth checking Auckland Council’s pest plant advice as well.

Should You Crown Lift or Remove a Tree?
When a big tree is shading the lawn or crowding the house, people often assume it has to come out. Usually it doesn’t.
Crown lifting removes the lowest branches so light reaches the ground and you can walk, mow or park underneath. The tree keeps its shape and its height, and you keep the privacy and shelter it gives you. Thinning a few branches inside the canopy can let even more light through.
If a tree really is dead, dangerous or in the wrong spot, removal may be the answer. We’ll give you an honest view when we look at it. [MISSING: confirm whether you remove whole trees or refer to work on.] Learn about crown lifting
How Do You Keep a Long Hedge Healthy?
A long hedge is only as good as its weakest stretch. One dead plant or a patch that’s been shaded out can leave a gap that takes years to fill.
Regular trimming helps more than anything. Light, frequent cuts keep the hedge dense all the way down, and the slight taper we trim into the sides lets light reach the base. It also helps to keep weeds and grass back from the bottom of the hedge, so they don’t compete for water. A layer of mulch along the base holds moisture through summer.
If a section does die off, it’s usually best to replace those plants sooner rather than later, while the plants on either side are still young enough to knit together with the new ones.
Which Hedge Plants Are Common in Greenhithe?
Greenhithe hedges tend to be a mix of old and new. On older properties you’ll find long runs of griselinia, pittosporum and sometimes privet or conifers planted decades ago. Newer homes lean towards lillypilly, photinia and native screens like karo and coprosma.
Each needs a slightly different approach. Griselinia and pittosporum take regular trimming well and fill in fast. Lillypilly and photinia are grown for their colourful new growth, so we time trims to bring on a fresh flush. Old privet is a pest plant in Auckland, and if it’s flowering and setting berries, it may be worth replacing. Conifers need light, careful trimming because most won’t regrow from bare wood.
Whatever you have, we’ll tell you what it is and how often it really needs doing.
